Centre Stage launches ‘Season of Icons’ with Neil Simon’s farce “Rumors” in Greenville

Greenville’s beloved downtown theatre, Centre Stage, is kicking off its 2026‑27 season with a laugh‑out‑loud comedy that promises high‑spirited chaos and classic Broadway charm. From September 17 through October 4, the house will present Neil Simon’s only full‑length farce, Rumors, directed by longtime local director John Fagan.

Why “Rumors” matters to Greenville audiences

Fagan, who has not directed a full‑scale farce in many years, said the production offers a rare chance to explore the precise timing and nonstop energy that farce demands. “I love doing farces,” he told the press. “The show is killer. It just makes you laugh and have fun.” He added that every bit of slapstick must stay rooted in character, ensuring the comedy serves the story rather than devolving into mere gimmickry.

A personal connection for Centre Stage’s leadership

Executive artistic director Laura Nicholas recalled that Rumors holds special significance for her. The play was the first show she ever saw at Centre Stage back in 2012, a performance that helped convince her to join the organization. “It felt like a turning point,” Nicholas said, noting that the production’s iconic status aligns perfectly with the theatre’s newly announced “Season of Icons.” The season will celebrate landmark performers, characters, stories, and writers, beginning with Simon, whom Nicholas calls an iconic figure in American theatre.

What audiences can expect

Set in a wealthy New York apartment, Rumors follows a group of couples whose dinner party spirals into a series of increasingly elaborate lies as they try to hide a mishap from arriving guests and the police. The misunderstandings build “until it explodes,” Fagan explained, delivering the kind of rapid‑fire dialogue and physical comedy that has made the play a staple of regional theatres since its 1988 debut.

Season lineup and future programming

After Rumors, Centre Stage’s schedule includes a holiday‑themed “Million Dollar Quartet Christmas” (Dec. 3‑20), the soulful musical “Ain’t Too Proud” (Mar. 11‑27), a teen‑focused comedy “Mean Girls” (May 13‑30), the classic thriller “The 39 Steps” (June 24‑July 11), and the whimsical “Once Upon a Mattress” (Aug. 12‑29). The theatre will also continue its Fringe series in January and February, featuring the AI‑themed drama “Marjorie Prime” (Jan. 14‑17).

Practical details

Tickets for Rumors range from $31.50 to $36.50 and can be purchased by calling 864‑233‑6733 or visiting centrestage.org. The production runs at Centre Stage’s River Street venue, 501 River St., Greenville, SC.

Community impact

By opening the season with a proven crowd‑pleaser, Centre Stage aims to draw families, longtime theatre‑goers, and newcomers alike, reinforcing the role of the arts as a cornerstone of a vibrant, faith‑grounded community. The theatre’s commitment to presenting iconic works underscores its mission to provide wholesome, family‑friendly entertainment that aligns with traditional values while enriching the cultural life of Greenville.
