The Central Florida Expressway Authority is exploring ways to expand its wrong-way detection system on toll roads. The system, which has been in place for 10 years, has helped prevent crashes on toll roads by detecting wrong-way drivers and alerting them through flashing signs.

System Effectiveness

Since its implementation, the system has detected over 2,800 wrong-way drivers, with about 89% of them able to turn around safely. This year, there have been at least 160 wrong-way incidents, resulting in only one crash.

The agency is now considering expanding the system to monitor drivers on the mainline sections of the roads, starting with a pilot program on State Road 417 between International Drive and John Young Parkway. Additionally, they are looking into installing raised, illuminated markers to make warnings more visible and working with GPS app developers to integrate alerts into navigation systems.
