The list looks beyond popular tourist destinations to discover less-discovered communities, such as Roanoke, Virginia, a gateway to outdoor adventures along the Appalachian Trail and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Roanoke’s compact, walkable downtown has a growing food scene, perfect for refueling after a day in the hills.
Other unique events and attractions include the Sail250 flotilla of tall ships and military vessels making its way up the Atlantic Coast, and the world’s largest operating steam locomotive embarking on a month-long journey from Scranton, Pennsylvania, to Cheyenne, Wyoming.
