A preexisting bump on southbound I-25 near the Bijou Street interchange in Colorado Springs recently worsened, causing many drivers to worry about damage to their vehicles. The bump stretched almost entirely across the southbound lanes and was practically impossible to avoid.
CDOT Response
After receiving emails from concerned drivers, The Road Warrior contacted the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) about the matter. By Wednesday, CDOT had flattened and covered the bump with either asphalt or a black material.
CDOT has been working to address road bumps in the area, including those that form from potholes or pavement damage, as well as those that occur where older asphalt pavement meets newer concrete pavement. The department has patched some of the pothole bumps with materials such as Fibercrete or Gap-B, but many drivers believe this approach has not been effective.
A CDOT engineer has stated that the best solution is to replace the concrete panels where the pavement is damaged, but this is difficult due to heavy traffic on highways. CDOT has also said that repairing the bumps where asphalt and concrete pavement meet is a complex and expensive process.
