Casper Council Hopefuls Discuss Affordability

Casper City Council and Natrona County Commission candidates gathered at the Natrona County Democratic Party’s ‘Democracy in Action’ forum to discuss key issues affecting the community. The candidates emphasized the need for affordable housing, improved infrastructure, and better coordination of services to address the concerns of young people who are struggling to build a life in Casper.

Affordability and Infrastructure

Kaycee Wiita, a Ward III council candidate, highlighted the importance of creating a vibrant community where young people can afford to live and work. She noted that the exodus of young people from Wyoming is a major concern that needs to be addressed. Other candidates, such as Kathryn Morgan and Terry Wingerter, also emphasized the need for affordable housing and improved infrastructure, including roads and public transportation.

Brett Hobza, a retired architect, focused on the issue of local assessment districts that can burden homeowners with high bills for repairs. He proposed working with the Legislature to rescind this statute. Jessie Bell, a parent and art therapist, discussed the social strain on families who have to seek medical specialists outside of Casper.

Coordination of Services

The candidates also discussed the need for better coordination of services to address the gaps in support for residents. Keegan Fox, a Ward II council candidate, pointed to the importance of community groups working together to provide services to those in need. Candice Machado, a commission candidate, emphasized the need for more governmental transparency and coordination to address the mental health and healthcare shortages in the county.

Lisa Jamieson, another commission candidate, highlighted the need to slow down the approval process for the proposed Prometheus Hyper Scale data center and ensure that it goes through the full industrial-siting process. She also expressed concerns about the impact of the November property-tax initiative on schools and first responders.
