A memorial in Carrollton is drawing veterans and strangers alike to honor Private First Class Isabella Gonzales, a 19-year-old soldier killed in action in Jordan on July 17.

John Jun, a veteran and homeowner, created the display on his backyard fence facing Standridge Drive. The memorial features dozens of American flags and a banner that reads: “Freedom is not free. All gave some and some gave all and lest we forget those who paid the ultimate price. In memory and honor of Pvt. Isabella Gonzales.”
Jun, who never met Gonzales, says he can’t stop thinking about the family she leaves behind. “I have 4 kids, my youngest just turned 20 earlier this year, and I can’t imagine the pain and suffering the family is going through,” said Jun.
The memorial is also drawing other veterans, including retired Air Force Veteran Bob Valencia. “It broke my heart. I mean to be honest with you, veterans, we all stick together, and it’s been on my mind ever since it happened,” said Valencia.
The City of Carrollton is planning a public vigil, and the U.S. military is finalizing funeral arrangements for Gonzales, who will be laid to rest at DFW National Cemetery.
