Cape Verde opened the scoring in the 21st minute with a stunning long-range free kick from midfielder Kevin Pina, marking the country’s first-ever World Cup goal and lead.
Uruguay equalized with two goals before halftime, but Cape Verde scored again in the 61st minute when forward Helio Varela capitalized on Uruguayan goalie Fernando Muslera being out of position.
