Canutillo ISD launches $4 million private fiber network for classrooms and safety

Canutillo, Texas – On Wednesday, Canutillo Independent School District (CISD) officially broke ground on a private fiber‑optic network designed to modernize digital learning and improve campus security. Superintendent Josue Borrego said the $4 million project, financed through a federal grant, will not draw on local taxpayers’ money.

“The new network will guarantee resilience and uptime, enabling uninterrupted access to digital learning tools, virtual classrooms, and advanced educational resources,” the district announced. Borrego added that reliable connectivity is essential for today’s classrooms, noting that students rely on laptops and teachers depend on high‑speed internet to deliver lessons.

Benefits for students and families

The private fiber system will provide high‑speed, reliable internet to every CISD school, ensuring that students can stream instructional videos, participate in online assessments, and collaborate in real‑time without lag. Parents will also see a boost in the district’s ability to communicate quickly about school events, emergencies, and academic updates.

Enhanced security infrastructure

Beyond academic advantages, the network will support upgraded security measures across district facilities. By linking computers, cameras, and building‑wide alarm systems to a dedicated, secure line, CISD aims to protect students and staff from cyber‑threats and improve response times during emergencies.

“Every day, we’re so dependent on connectivity. This will allow us to provide a top‑tier service to our students and our families,” Borrego said.

Partnerships and implementation

CISD partnered with technology enabler UDT and infrastructure provider WANRack to design and install the fiber backbone. The collaboration will oversee the rollout, testing, and ongoing maintenance of the network, ensuring that the system meets the district’s performance standards.

The project aligns with broader efforts across Texas to close the digital divide in education, giving rural and suburban districts the tools needed to compete in a technology‑driven world. By leveraging federal funding, Canutillo ISD demonstrates how local leaders can secure resources without increasing the tax burden on families.

Looking ahead

Superintendent Borrego indicated that the district will monitor the network’s impact on student achievement and safety outcomes, with plans to expand capacity as enrollment grows. Community members are encouraged to stay informed through district communications and upcoming board meetings where the project’s progress will be reviewed.

With the private fiber network now under construction, Canutillo ISD positions itself at the forefront of educational technology, promising a safer, more connected learning environment for the city’s children.
