Callaway and Good Good pull controversial driver ad after backlash

The golf world was rocked this week when a new advertisement for a co‑branded driver from equipment maker Callaway and media brand Good Good was pulled after viewers condemned a violent scene. The video opened with Good Good co‑founder Garrett Clark shoulder‑checking Alexis Miestowski to the ground as she reached for his driver.

Backlash and apologies

The ad quickly drew intense criticism for depicting aggression toward a woman, and both companies issued statements apologizing for the misstep. Clark posted a video on X apologizing for his “role” in the ad, calling it a “super dumb” concept and saying he felt “cringe” watching it. He also condemned the hate and death threats Miestowski received online.

Callaway CEO Chip Brewer confirmed the company had approved the ad and expressed regret, stating the content was “inappropriate” and did not reflect the brand’s values. He emphasized Callaway’s unequivocal stance against discrimination, domestic violence, and threatening behavior.

Good Good’s response

Good Good also issued an apology, reaffirming its mission to make golf more inclusive, especially for women, and pledged to continue supporting the “women’s side of the game.” The company highlighted its efforts to grow the sport beyond its traditionally male‑dominated image, noting the upcoming Good Good Championship in Austin, Texas.

PGA Tour reaction

PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp said the organization was disappointed with Good Good’s initial response, describing it as defensive and delayed. He added that the Tour is monitoring the situation and will assess any impact on the November championship.

Industry context

The controversy underscores the tension between golf’s long‑standing, modest image and the newer, internet‑driven personalities that are attracting younger fans. While the PGA Tour has embraced influencers to broaden its appeal, incidents like this raise questions about how far the partnership model should extend.

As the sport continues to evolve, stakeholders say the focus must remain on respectful, family‑friendly content that aligns with the values of both traditional golf fans and the growing online audience.
