California Gov. Gavin Newsom stated that he and his wife are being investigated by the Justice Department, accusing President Donald Trump of targeting him for political reasons.
Investigation Details
According to Newsom, agents have been questioning family friends and former employees, demanding records and random documents. The White House referred NBC News to the DOJ for comment, but the DOJ declined to comment.
Newsom, a Democrat who has repeatedly clashed with the president, believes the probe is politically motivated due to his criticisms of Trump and his potential run for the Oval Office.
The reported probe follows a series of federal indictments and investigations against Trump’s perceived political enemies, including former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James.
Newsom suggested that Trump should be the one under investigation, calling him ‘simply the most corrupt president in American history.’ Trump had previously endorsed the idea of arresting Newsom during clashes between the administration and officials in California over immigration enforcement.
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche stated that it’s ‘appropriate’ for the president to direct investigations. The Trump administration also tried and failed to indict six sitting members of Congress over a social media video.
