Caddo Parish, Louisiana, is facing a critical shortage of poll workers as veteran election officials retire. Clerk of Court Mike Spence reported that 85 voting precincts lacked sufficient staffing during recent elections.
Poll Worker Recruitment Efforts
Spence noted that while commissioners serve out of dedication rather than the $200 stipend, long-serving staff are retiring without enough incoming volunteers to replace them. The local deficit reflects national trends, with more than 54% of election offices across the country struggling to recruit workers, whose average age exceeds 61.
In response, National Poll Worker Recruitment Day is set for Tuesday. Prospective volunteers must complete an online assessment and attend one in-person training session prior to Election Day.
