Caddo Magnet High dedicates permanent mural honoring fallen Navy SEAL alumni

Shreveport, La. – On Friday, Caddo Parish Magnet High School gathered its students, alumni, veterans, elected officials and community members to unveil a permanent memorial mural honoring two of its graduates who gave the ultimate sacrifice while serving as Navy SEALs.

Honoring two hometown heroes

The mural celebrates Lt. Cmdr. Jonas Kelsall, class of 1996, and Senior Chief Petty Officer Robert Reeves, class of 1997. Both men grew up together, played soccer for the Mustangs, and later joined the elite Navy SEAL teams. Their service continued through the years following the September 11, 2001 attacks.

On Aug. 6, 2011, Kelsall and Reeves were among 30 American service members killed when their CH‑47 Chinook helicopter was shot down during a mission in Wardak Province, Afghanistan. Their loss remains a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by military families across the nation.

Community participation and artistic collaboration

U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson attended the ceremony, spending time with the families to hear personal stories of the two fallen service members. The event also featured remarks from school leaders who highlighted the mural’s role in providing a lasting visual tribute on campus.

Local artist Laura Vickers designed the piece, working closely with Caddo Magnet students Avery Ella Buhl, Lila Jacobs and Morgan Lanclos. Their collaboration produced a striking artwork that will stand as a daily reminder of courage, friendship, and service for current and future students.

A lasting addition to school traditions

While Caddo Magnet has long honored Kelsall and Reeves during its annual September 11 observances, school officials said the new mural creates a permanent presence that reinforces the school’s commitment to remembering its alumni’s bravery. The dedication aligns with the school’s broader mission to instill values of patriotism, sacrifice, and community service in its students.

Family members of the fallen SEALs expressed gratitude for the community’s support and the lasting tribute. “Seeing their names and faces on the wall every day means the world to us,” said a family spokesperson. “It ensures their legacy lives on in the hearts of the next generation.”

Looking forward

The mural’s unveiling marks a meaningful moment for Shreveport’s broader community, underscoring the city’s deep respect for its military heroes. As the school year continues, the artwork will serve as a focal point for remembrance ceremonies, veteran visits, and educational discussions about service and sacrifice.
