Caddo County wildfire near Binger and Lookeba prompts evacuations, no homes damaged

On Friday, a wildfire erupted in Caddo County, Oklahoma, stretching roughly 1.4 to 1.5 miles at its peak. The fire burned an estimated 350 to 400 acres before crews were able to fully contain it. Residents along Highway 281 and 1170 Road were ordered to evacuate as a precaution, though the flames never reached any structures.

Fire response and containment

Binger Fire Chief Nick Westbrook described the multi‑agency effort that brought the blaze under control. Local fire departments, federal agencies and aerial units worked together for several hours, dropping water and fire retardant from helicopters and fixed‑wing aircraft. “They’re a blessing in the sky, literally,” Westbrook said of the air support.

The National Weather Service in Norman issued a fire warning specifically for the Binger‑Lookeba area, underscoring the seriousness of the situation. High winds and extremely dry conditions threatened rapid spread, but a reservoir on the far north side of the fire line helped redirect the flames, giving ground crews a tactical advantage.

Evacuations and community impact

Evacuation orders were issued for the town of Lookeba and surrounding neighborhoods as a safety measure. “A lot of people probably got evacuated that in the end didn’t need to, but better safe than sorry,” Westbrook noted. One residence near 1170 Road came close to the fire’s edge, prompting additional resources to protect the property. “It got up pretty close; it got a little scary for them at one point, but we got more assets there at that time, and they kept it from burning down,” he added.

Despite the proximity of the blaze to homes, no injuries were reported and no structures were lost. Residents shared video of the fire on social media, illustrating the intense heat and smoke that crews faced.

Investigation and next steps

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Westbrook said the most likely source is a vehicle‑related spark, such as a chain dragging on the road, but officials have not confirmed a definitive origin. “Don’t know exactly what started it; I assume something from a vehicle, chains maybe, you never know,” he said.

County officials will continue to assess the burned area and determine the final acreage. The collaborative response highlighted the importance of coordinated resources between local fire departments, state agencies and federal partners in protecting rural communities from wildfire threats.

What residents can do

Authorities remind residents to clear vegetation away from homes, maintain defensible space, and stay informed of fire weather alerts during the dry season. The Caddo County Emergency Management Office encourages anyone with information about the fire’s origin to contact the department.
