Cabot’s Highway 5-Interstate 57 Project Aims to Ease Traffic and Boost Economy

Cabot, Arkansas, is gearing up for significant improvements to the Highway 5-Interstate 57 interchange, a project that promises to alleviate traffic congestion and spur economic growth in the area. On Thursday, officials from the Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT) and the city of Cabot broke ground on this much-anticipated development.

Addressing Traffic Concerns

Currently, Highway 5 north of the interstate handles 18,000 vehicles daily, while south of the interstate sees 21,000 cars each day, according to ARDOT Director Jared Wiley. To address this heavy traffic, the interchange will be transformed into a Single-Point Urban Interchange (SPUI), which consolidates traffic flow through a single point and set of traffic lights, thereby reducing stoppages and congestion.

Arkansas Speaker of the House, Brian Evans, who resides in Cabot, expressed optimism about the project’s impact. ‘This is going to improve safety and our flow of traffic, but it’s also going to be a great economic boost for us as an investment in our people and our businesses,’ he said.

Community Patience and Progress

While the project is a step forward, Cabot’s Mayor Ken Kincade acknowledged the temporary inconveniences that come with such developments. ‘Progress can be painful,’ he told attendees at the groundbreaking ceremony. ‘But the pain will go away and be replaced with joy and ease. Just bear with us for two years, I beg you.’

The project is expected to be completed by mid-to-late 2028, with ongoing construction on Interstate 57 from Highway 5 to Highway 89 slated for completion by the middle of next year, according to Wiley.
