The Butler County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Unit recently recovered two boxes of black powder pellets believed to have been manufactured in the 1960s. The discovery was made during a cleanout of a deceased person’s belongings in Hamilton, Ohio. A bomb specialist was called to the scene, where the pellets were found.
Historical and Hazardous
The two boxes contained a total of 20 pellets, with a combined net explosive weight of approximately 1.37 pounds. According to the labeling, these pellets were manufactured in June 1963. The sheriff’s office explained that these pellets were used as an intermediate ignition charge in large artillery systems, such as those found on naval battleships, where they ignited smokeless powder propellant charges.
Despite their age, these items remain hazardous. The Butler County Sheriff’s Office emphasized the importance of contacting law enforcement if such items are discovered. They advised, “If you discover old military ordnance, explosives, blasting materials, or other suspicious items while cleaning out a home, garage, or estate, do not handle them. Contact local law enforcement and allow trained personnel to assess the situation.”
Community Safety First
This incident serves as a reminder of the potential dangers that can be found in unexpected places. The Butler County Sheriff’s Office’s prompt response ensured the safe handling and removal of these potentially dangerous items, prioritizing community safety. Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious findings to local authorities.
