Bullitt County students returning to class will notice new security measures, including weapons detection systems at all three high schools and a dedicated district police department.

Enhanced Safety Measures

Superintendent Jesse Bacon stated that the district’s primary concern is the safety of its students, and the new measures are a result of an internal review to improve security. The police department, led by Chief Mike Huffman, will provide additional security resources and eventually have a dedicated school resource officer in all 21 schools.

The district’s decision to establish its own police department comes after previously partnering with local police departments to provide school resource officers. Bacon expressed hope that the new department will attract a different kind of officer to serve as school resource officers, making it easier to onboard them.

While the new security measures are a significant step forward, Bacon noted that the district does not currently plan to install weapons detectors at other schools beyond the high schools.
