Veteran actor Bruce Campbell, best known for the cult classic Evil Dead, is stepping away from the traditional Hollywood studio system. He and his wife, longtime partner and costume designer Ida Gearon, are independently producing, directing, writing and starring in the new film Ernie & Emma, shot entirely in southern Oregon.
Why the shift?
Campbell recalled his first studio experience, saying he was “kicked out of the lead” and the movie was later re‑edited, retitled and never released. “The taste in my mouth from studios is very sour,” he told Fox News Digital, adding that the experience motivated him to seek unbridled creative control.
Personal stakes
The project takes on added significance after Campbell disclosed a cancer diagnosis in March. He told The Adam Carolla Show that doctors gave him an estimated five‑year outlook, but he remains focused on treatment and continuing his work.
Production details
“Ernie & Emma” follows Ernie Tyler, a small‑town pear salesman who embarks on a road trip through Pear Valley, Oregon, after his wife Emma dies. The couple filmed on location in their home state, with Gearon urging Campbell to keep the shoot close to home: “She goes, ‘Bruce, we should shoot in Oregon. You should sleep in your own bed.’” Campbell described the experience as “bizarre” but affirmed he will not return to the studio system.
Family collaboration
Working with his wife proved harmonious. “The best part of working with my wife was that, for once, we didn’t argue,” Campbell said. He praised Gearon as “rock solid” and noted their partnership has evolved into a familial bond after more than three decades together.
Distribution plan
Following sold‑out screenings at independent theaters, Campbell plans a nationwide road‑show of the film at Alamo Drafthouse locations, bringing the locally‑made story to a broader audience.
