Brooklyn Resident Killed After Bag Catches in Subway Door During Evening Rush

Brooklyn, NY – On Monday evening around 6 p.m., Yaw Boahene, 57, was attempting to exit a subway train at a Brooklyn station when his shopping bag became caught in the closing doors. The snag pulled him onto the tracks just as the train departed, and he was run over by the moving train.

Police and MTA response

Police officers arrived to find Boahene unconscious and unresponsive on the tracks. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The medical examiner’s office will determine the official cause of death, and the police investigation remains ongoing.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) confirmed that both the train operator and the conductor were removed from service immediately, as is standard procedure while an incident is investigated. The train involved was one of the system’s newest models. It had been inspected after the fatality and previously in July, with no mechanical issues reported.

Context of similar incidents

While tragic, this incident is not the first time a passenger has been injured or killed by a door‑related accident on the nation’s largest subway system. In 2022, a 20‑year‑old commuter died at the Columbus Circle station in Manhattan after a backpack or piece of clothing became stuck in a train door.

These occurrences underscore the importance of vigilance during peak‑hour travel and the need for continued safety education for riders. The MTA routinely reminds passengers to keep personal items clear of doors and to step back promptly when doors begin to close.

Safety measures and community impact

City officials and transit advocates have called for additional signage and public‑awareness campaigns to reduce the risk of similar accidents. Some community leaders suggest that station announcements during rush hour could emphasize the danger of carrying large bags near doors.

Mayor Eric Adams’ office has expressed condolences to Boahene’s family and reiterated the city’s commitment to improving subway safety. The administration’s focus remains on maintaining reliable service while protecting the well‑being of New Yorkers who rely on public transportation daily.

What riders can do

  • Keep bags, backpacks, and other personal items away from train doors.
  • Step back quickly if a door begins to close and wait for the next train if necessary.
  • Report any door malfunctions or safety concerns to MTA staff or the NYPD’s Transit Division.

As the investigation proceeds, the MTA will release any additional findings regarding the incident and any recommended changes to operating procedures.
