Several people were injured in shootings that took place in Brockton, Massachusetts, on Sunday night as crowds gathered following Cape Verde’s historic draw in the World Cup, police said.
Brockton has a large Cape Verdean population, and the nation scored its first ever World Cup goal in a 2-2 tie with Uruguay Sunday.
The game ended about 8 p.m., and Brockton police said Monday that crowds began to gather downtown starting in the evening. Roads were blocked, fireworks set off and fights broke out.
Brockton police said that, while they, Massachusetts State Police and other partners worked to clear the roads and manage crowds, they received reports of gunfire at five locations: Main Street at Hervey Street, Forest Avenue, Central Square, again on Main Street and on Warren Avenue.
Several people were taken to hospitals for treatment, according to police — they didn’t specify how many or how badly the people were hurt.
