Britain’s Josh Kerr is set to challenge the storied men’s mile record on Saturday. The 2023 world champion over the 1,500 meters metric mile has called his attempt ‘Project 222’, aiming to break Hicham El Guerrouj’s mark of 3 minutes, 43.13 seconds.
The Mile Record’s History
The mile is not a championships event, yet it has iconic status in track history. The four-minute barrier was finally broken in 1954 by British runner Roger Bannister. El Guerrouj’s record, set in 1999, is more than 16 seconds faster than Bannister’s.
Kerr, 28, has targeted the mile race at the Diamond League meeting as a main goal in a track season with neither Olympics nor world championships. He is the sixth-fastest athlete on the all-time list, and one of his rivals on Saturday is No. 4 in that list.
