The British Open is one of the four Grand Slam golf tournaments; the others are the Masters, the PGA Championship, and the US Open. The 154th Open Championship is scheduled to take place at Royal Birkdale Golf Club in England from July 16-19, 2026.
History of the British Open
The first British Open was played at Prestwick Golf Club in Scotland on October 17, 1860, with only eight men participating. In 1894, the British Open started adding other locations for the tournament, with Royal St. George’s Golf Club in England being the first non-Scottish club to host the British Open.
One hundred and fifty-six players compete in the British Open, with the top 70 players qualifying for the final 36 holes. The winner is presented the Golf Champion Trophy, nicknamed the Claret Jug. Harry Vardon has the most British Open wins with six, while Jack Nicklaus has been runner-up at the Open seven times.
