Brewers tie modern‑era shutout record with 22‑0 win over Mariners

Milwaukee – On Tuesday night the Brewers delivered a historic offensive outburst, defeating the Seattle Mariners 22‑0 and tying baseball’s modern‑era record for the largest shutout. The victory came at American Family Field in front of a lively crowd of 36,870 fans.

Power surge and record‑tying performance

The Brewers’ power display featured three‑run homers from Christian Yelich, David Hamilton and rookie Luis Lara, plus a two‑run blast by Jake Bauers. Yelich’s three‑run shot in the fifth inning marked his ninth homer of the season, while Bauers added his 22nd home run in the sixth and extended his on‑base streak to 20 straight games.

Milwaukee’s total of 117 home runs this season remains the fewest in the majors, but manager Pat Murphy emphasized the team’s depth of talent. “It’s one game but a pretty darn good performance,” Murphy said. “I’d like to see that every night.”

Off‑the‑field highlights

The Brewers also showcased aggressive base‑running, pulling off a double steal in the fifth inning that helped break open a tight contest. In the eighth inning, position player Leo Rivas was brought in to pitch, surrendering nine runs, including Lara’s first career home run off a position player.

Lara, who celebrated his milestone through an interpreter, said, “For me, it all counts,” acknowledging the unusual circumstance of hitting his first homer off a non‑pitcher.

Veteran catcher takes the mound

Veteran catcher/first baseman Gary Sanchez made a rare pitching appearance in the ninth inning, delivering a scoreless frame. It was Sanchez’s third career pitching outing and his second this season, adding two scoreless innings overall.

“He did great. He was a showman as always,” Bauers noted, praising Sanchez’s effort and the crowd’s enthusiasm.

Historical context

The 22‑run total matches the franchise record set on Aug. 28, 1992, against the Toronto Blue Jays. Since 1901, only two other teams have posted a 22‑0 victory: Pittsburgh over the Chicago Cubs in 1975 and Cleveland over the New York Yankees in 2004.

Seattle manager Dan Wilson, who had highlighted Milwaukee’s ability to hit the long ball despite a low home‑run total, said, “They’ll put bunts down, put pressure on the bases and steal bags. They also have the ability to hit the home run. You kind of have to prepare for all areas of the game.”

The Brewers’ dominant performance underscores a season in which they lead the majors with a 78‑48 record, reinforcing their status as the team with the best overall record in the league.
