Lightfoot, a Boston-based DJ, is teaching students at Berklee College of Music, guiding the next generation of artists through his own musical journey and craft. He believes that the best DJs are the ones who can create a narrative that goes beyond just music, giving a look into who they are and where they come from.
Lightfoot’s Musical Journey
Lightfoot’s roots in Jamaica Plain, surrounded by different cultures and musical identities, allowed him to grow artistically. His sound is a blend of different genres, from electronic music to hip-hop to global music. He advises young artists to figure out what their voice is and stay true to themselves, as this will help them break through the noise and show up as themselves.
Lightfoot now prefers performing over recording in the studio. Initially, he favored the studio because he was more nervous and introverted, but eventually met more people over time, leading him to go more public and work in public spaces. This led to his love for being on stage and performing in front of audiences.
Teaching and Inspiration
Lightfoot’s musical journey began by working with a nonprofit and co-directing at The Hip Hop Transformation, a program with which he has been working for 13 years. This program teaches young people how to get into a studio, write, record, produce MCs, and perform, while also providing them with early youth employment opportunities. Lightfoot found his way back into being a student and learning how to be on the other side of the classroom by teaching at Berklee College of Music.
By teaching his students about his craft and talent, Lightfoot enjoys guiding young artists who were once in his shoes. Working with creative and passionate students and colleagues at Berklee is what drives him to teach and share his industry experiences. Lightfoot also praised the music scene in Boston, describing it as a tight-knit community that wants to create opportunities for all its members.
