Bossier Parish Sheriff’s Office equips patrol cars with Grappler net to end vehicle pursuits safely

The Bossier Parish Sheriff’s Office announced Tuesday that it has begun installing a Grappler Police Bumper on a handful of its patrol vehicles. The device, mounted on the front of the vehicle, deploys a heavy‑duty nylon net to catch the rear wheel of a fleeing car, allowing deputies to bring the pursuit to a controlled stop.

How the Grappler works

When activated, the Grappler releases a sturdy net that wraps around the rear tire of the target vehicle. By slowing the wheel, the system can halt a high‑speed chase in seconds, reducing the distance a suspect travels and limiting the chance of a spin‑out, rollover or collision with other motorists.

Why the sheriff’s office added the tool

Sheriff Julian Whittington said the addition reflects the department’s ongoing effort to protect both law‑enforcement personnel and the public. “This new equipment gives deputies another option when faced with a dangerous fleeing driver. We hope we never have to use tools like this, but when a situation does arise, we want our deputies to have the safest and most practical options available,” Whittington explained.

The Grappler is intended to complement, not replace, existing pursuit policies. Deputies will receive specialized training on proper deployment, ensuring the tool is used only when it aligns with the department’s established pursuit guidelines.

Potential impact on chase outcomes

According to the sheriff’s office, the Grappler could shorten the length of a pursuit dramatically. By stopping a vehicle within seconds, the device may prevent chases from extending for miles, thereby reducing exposure to bystanders, passengers and other road users.

Law‑enforcement officials across the state have expressed interest in similar technologies, citing the need for safer alternatives to high‑speed maneuvers that can end in loss of control. The Bossier Parish department hopes its experience will inform broader discussions on pursuit safety.

Community response

Local residents and community leaders have largely welcomed the move, noting that safer pursuit methods align with broader public‑safety goals. Parents, in particular, appreciate any measure that lessens the risk of accidents on roads frequented by school buses and family vehicles.

While the Grappler is a new tool, the sheriff’s office emphasized that it will be employed judiciously, adhering to the same constitutional standards that guide all law‑enforcement actions in Louisiana.

Next steps

The department plans to evaluate the Grappler’s effectiveness over the coming months, collecting data on chase duration, incident outcomes and any unintended consequences. Findings will be shared with state officials and other sheriff’s offices considering similar equipment.

For now, the Grappler adds another layer of protection for deputies, motorists and the broader Benton community as the Bossier Parish Sheriff’s Office continues its commitment to public safety.
