Bluegrass on Ballard Returns: The Grascals Headline Downtown Wylie Festival

The Grascals, a Nashville-based bluegrass band, will headline Bluegrass on Ballard when downtown Wylie fills with music, vendors and a car, truck and motorcycle show on Saturday, May 30. The Wylie Downtown Merchants Association, the City of Wylie and the Bluegrass Heritage Foundation are teaming up to stage a free, all-day celebration in the city’s historic downtown. Attendees can expect a stacked lineup of national acts, community jam sessions and family-friendly festival vibes from morning into evening.

The festival footprint stretches across Ballard Avenue where stages, vendor booths and pop-up jam circles will create a steady hum of music. Organizers invite local and traveling musicians to bring instruments and join impromptu sessions around downtown, turning sidewalks and porches into informal stages. That casual, community-driven energy is a big part of what draws people back year after year.

Alongside the music, the Bluegrass on Ballard Car, Truck and Motorcycle Show runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., hosted by East Fork Masonic Lodge No. 650. Classic rides and custom builds will line the streets so attendees can admire chrome, paint jobs and engines while the bands play nearby. Organizers describe it as a chance to enjoy “sweet rides, bluegrass tunes and good vibes” all in one spot.

Music officially starts at 11 a.m. and rolls on into the evening, giving plenty of time for sets, browsing vendor stalls and dropping into a jam. The day’s bill includes Bobby Giles & Texas Gales, Randy Collier & Grassland, Riley Gilbreath & Lone Star Blue, Kristy Cox, Dave Adkins & Mountain Soul and headliner The Grascals. With a mix of established names and rising acts, the lineup aims to cover a broad slice of bluegrass styles.

The Grascals, who take the stage at 5 p.m., are one of the more decorated groups in modern bluegrass. Formed in Nashville in 2004, they earned an early break when Dolly Parton selected them as an opening act and backing band, a boost that helped launch their national profile. Since then they have collected multiple International Bluegrass Music Association awards and earned Grammy nominations while touring widely.

Dave Adkins & Mountain Soul also draw notice on the bill, with Adkins known for a hard-driving style and a powerful vocal delivery that fits well with festival stages. Adkins has been a nominee for Grammy recognition, and his performances tend to bring energy that amps up outdoor crowds. Fans of high-lift tenor leads and tight instrumental work will likely find his set memorable.

Australian artist Kristy Cox joins the roster and brings an international flavor to the Texas spring lineup. Cox recently released the Billboard-topping album “Let It Burn” and has been honored with multiple awards at Australia’s CMA Awards, including six Bluegrass Recording of the Year titles. Her presence on the bill underscores the festival’s pull for artists from outside the U.S. bluegrass circuit.

Vendors and local shops will be on hand throughout downtown, offering food, crafts and shopping opportunities for festivalgoers. The event is designed to showcase the merchants of Wylie while giving visitors reasons to stay, explore and enjoy the historic district. With no admission fee, the day is meant to be accessible to families and folks just passing through.

Organizers stress that the event is free to attend and open to all, a point that keeps the festival welcoming and community-focused. Whether attendees come for the cars, the food, the chance to pick along in a jam or to catch a favorite band, the layout and schedule are built to make wandering between stages and exhibits easy. For locals and visitors alike, the combination of music, vehicles and downtown energy makes Bluegrass on Ballard a one-day highlight.
