The Bureau of Land Management announced a Wyoming oil and gas lease sale scheduled for September 15. The federal agency plans to offer 120 parcels covering a total of 152,262 acres.

A 30-day public protest period opened and is set to conclude August 9. This phase of the process follows a scoping period completed in February and a public comment period on the parcels and environmental analysis that ended in June.
Leasing is only the first step in the resource development process. Before any development operations can begin, an operator is required to submit an application for a permit to drill that includes specific development plans. The agency then reviews those applications, posts them for public review, performs an environmental analysis, and coordinates with stakeholders and state partners.
All parcels included in the upcoming sale carry stipulations designed to protect natural resources. Detailed information regarding the leases is hosted through the National Fluid Lease Sale System, and the auction itself will be conducted online through Efficient Markets.
Members of the public can find maps and instructions on how to submit a protest through the agency’s ePlanning website.
