Blind Detroit dance instructor launches weekly class for visually impaired

Detroit resident known as Lady J is turning personal adversity into a community resource. After a retinal detachment left her with limited sight six years ago, she refused to let the loss halt her passion for dance.

Now, every Monday from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Lady J opens the studio at 7800 West Outer Drive to a group of about 15 participants who are blind or have low vision. The class focuses on listening to music, feeling the beat, and moving together without mirrors or visual cues.

From “blind hustler” to instructor

Lady J describes herself as “the blind hustler,” a nickname that grew as she created her own dance style after realizing she could not follow the steps that sighted dancers used. “I began to make up my own hustles because I didn’t have enough sight to learn the hustles everybody else was doing,” she explained.

Her journey began with a serious eye injury that caused a retinal detachment in her left eye, permanently reducing her vision. Despite the setback, she continued to dance, saying, “It didn’t stop me from moving forward and moving to the beat.”

Community impact

The class is more than a fitness activity; it serves as a peer‑support gathering for Detroit’s disability community. Participants are connected through the Disability Network of Wayne County, which helps people with disabilities access needed resources. Koko Etim, communications director for the network, noted that passersby often stop to ask, “Who are they?” and then learn that the dancers are blind, prompting curiosity and greater awareness.

“When they see them dancing, they see that they are with a cane,” Etim said. “So when they say, ‘Why do they have a cane? Oh, they are blind people. Oh, wow!’”

Building confidence through rhythm

Class members report that learning to dance without sight builds confidence and social connection. “It was hard being blind and dancing,” Lady J said. “Now they’re out listening to music, being able to relate to the music, coming together, socializing, being happy again.”

She emphasizes that participants do not need to see the next step to take it. “This is not an easy journey, but if you’re going through the same thing I’m going through, you can make it,” she encouraged.

Future plans and funding needs

Lady J hopes to expand the program and eventually open a dedicated studio for blind and low‑vision dancers. To achieve that goal, she is seeking community support and funding through a GoFundMe campaign.

“I want people to support. I want people in the community to know that together we can do this,” she said. “The key is finding and owning your own beat.”

For those interested in contributing or learning more about the class, details are available on her GoFundMe page, and the weekly sessions continue at the West Outer Drive location.
