Des Moines – Blank Park Zoo announced the opening of an expanded lion exhibit that is three times larger than the previous enclosure. The new habitat, which opened to the public on Thursday, features naturalistic elements such as rock formations, grassy areas, shaded spots and even a model airplane that provides elevation and visual interest for the lions.
Design focused on animal well‑being
Anne Shimerdla, a senior staff member at the zoo, explained that the redesign was driven by a commitment to the lions’ health and happiness. “One of the big changes is being able to breed the lions that we have and then to be able to have cubs when they’re here, which is really exciting to see cubs in this area,” Shimerdla said. To support this goal, three new lions have been introduced to the expanded space.
Conservation and education at the forefront
The larger exhibit is part of Blank Park Zoo’s years‑long impact campaign, which aims to strengthen conservation programs and enhance educational opportunities for visitors. By providing a more natural environment, the zoo hopes to foster a deeper appreciation for wildlife and inspire community support for conservation efforts.
In addition to the lion habitat, the zoo is advancing its Wild Iowa project, which will eventually showcase a variety of native species including eagles, otters, bobcats and small aquariums. These upcoming additions will further highlight Iowa’s rich biodiversity and the zoo’s role in preserving it.
Visitor experience
Guests can explore the new lion exhibit starting Thursday, with viewing areas that allow close observation while maintaining safe distances. The design incorporates both sun and shade, giving the lions the ability to regulate their temperature throughout the day. The inclusion of the model plane adds a playful element that encourages curiosity among younger visitors.
Blank Park Zoo encourages families and community members to visit the exhibit and learn more about the zoo’s conservation initiatives. Admission remains free for Iowa residents, reinforcing the zoo’s mission to make wildlife education accessible to all.
Looking ahead
As the zoo continues to expand its animal habitats and educational programs, officials remain optimistic that the new lion exhibit will serve as a model for future projects. The focus on animal welfare, breeding success and community engagement aligns with the zoo’s broader goal of fostering stewardship of the natural world within Des Moines and beyond.
