Billings, Mont. – On Sunday evening, a tragic shooting and fire claimed the lives of eight members of a single family on the outskirts of Billings. Authorities say 44‑year‑old Alan Smith killed his grandmother, his parents, his younger sister and her children before turning the gun on himself as police arrived.
Investigation underway
Yellowstone County Sheriff Kent O’Donnell briefed the press Wednesday, describing how investigators are methodically sifting through the charred remains of the suburban home. “There are many questions that will come from this investigation,” O’Donnell said, adding that some answers may never be known because the key witnesses are no longer with us.
Smith arrived in the neighborhood at 5:49 p.m. and, shortly after 6 p.m., a 911 call was placed from the home. While the caller could not be confirmed, a neighbor identified the 12‑year‑old Charlotte Ghekiere as the one who dialed emergency services while trying to save her family.
Victims and family background
The victims included Owen and Chloe Ireland, both children, and their stepsiblings Landon and Charlotte Ghekiere. Owen, 13, was described by his father as a “perfect big brother” and protector of his sister. Landon, 15, was preparing to obtain his driver’s license, and Charlotte, 12, loved nature and insects, according to neighbor and family friend Jennifer Mercer.
The adults killed were Dana Smith, a retired Air Force and Boeing employee, and Barb Smith, a retired teacher. Also among the dead was Evelyn Smith, 92, Dana’s mother, who used a wheelchair and lived nearby.
Details of the incident
Police say multiple fires were set inside the home after the shooting. Officers who arrived first confronted Smith, who fled back inside, fired a weapon, and then retreated to the backyard where he shot himself.
Because the neighborhood relies on private wells and lacks fire hydrants, firefighters had to truck in water to combat the blaze. Autopsies are ongoing, and law enforcement has recovered weapons from the scene, though specifics about the firearms have not been released.
Community response
A makeshift memorial has sprung up at the neighborhood mailboxes, featuring teddy bears, family photos, flowers, balloons and a notebook for messages. One classmate wrote that they were “sorry they won’t see them in school this year.”
Mayor Mike Nelson expressed the deep impact on the city of 120,000 residents, saying, “There was shock at first and now there are people who are deeply upset, and they should be. There are people who are angry, and that’s OK too. We’ll come together and we’ll support the family.”
Looking ahead
A candlelight vigil is planned for Thursday night, giving neighbors and friends a chance to pray and mourn together. Sheriff O’Donnell noted that among the items recovered were a largely intact photo album and a family Bible that survived the fire, offering a small ray of hope amid the tragedy.
