Bill Maher says Californians will not back Republican candidates while Trump remains in the GOP

During a recent episode of the “Club Random” podcast, comedian and commentator Bill Maher asserted that California’s electorate would never choose a Republican candidate while President Donald Trump remains linked to the GOP. Maher, speaking with host David Foster, said the state’s voters would “accept failure” under Democratic leadership rather than support the party of Trump.

Maher’s criticism of California policies

Maher pointed to several areas where he believes California lags behind states such as Mississippi and Texas. He highlighted education outcomes, noting that a Black fourth‑grader in Mississippi is “2.5 times as likely to be proficient” in math and reading compared with a peer in California. He cited the 2024 National Assessment of Educational Programs, which reported 19% proficiency for Black Mississippi students in reading versus 7% in California, and 22% proficiency in math versus 10% in California.

He also criticized California’s approach to green energy and government‑run grocery stores, comparing the latter to the failed models of Cuba and the former Soviet Union. “I don’t think we should have government‑run grocery stores,” Maher said, adding that the state’s policies have led to what he described as “a failed system.”

Political context

Maher’s comments come amid ongoing debates about the Republican Party’s identity under President Trump. While Maher argues that the presence of Trump in the party makes it impossible for California voters to swing Republican, the President’s administration continues to promote policies aimed at reducing federal regulation, supporting energy independence, and strengthening border security.

Psychotherapist and author Jonathan Alpert, speaking to Fox News Digital, warned that the phenomenon Maher describes is not unique to California. Alpert said, “Once politics becomes part of your identity, it’s remarkably easy to excuse things from your own side that you’d be furious about if the other side did them.” He suggested that both parties risk complacency when voters feel locked into a single political identity.

Comparisons with other states

Maher contrasted California’s performance with that of Mississippi and Texas, noting that the latter states achieve higher educational outcomes with less spending. He remarked, “Mississippi is kicking our a‑‑ in education and for way less money. We’re 37th in fourth‑grade reading. They’re ninth.” He also referenced a February 2026 New York Times article that highlighted the stark disparity in reading proficiency between Black students in the two states.

While Maher’s remarks focus on California’s challenges, they also reflect a broader national conversation about partisan loyalty, policy effectiveness, and the role of identity in voting behavior.

Public reaction

Listeners and commentators have offered mixed responses. Some agree with Maher’s assessment of California’s education system, while others argue that the state’s policies reflect a commitment to environmental stewardship and social equity. Critics of Maher note that his statements rely heavily on partisan framing and that the data he cites do not capture the full complexity of state‑level education funding and outcomes.

Regardless of the differing viewpoints, Maher’s interview underscores the ongoing tension between California’s Democratic leadership and the Republican Party’s national strategy under President Trump.
