The Pro Football Hall of Fame’s coaching subcommittee has narrowed its list to five finalists for the 2027 Hall of Fame class. The coaches—Bill Belichick, Tom Coughlin, Mike Holmgren, Dan Reeves and Mike Shanahan—were selected from an original field of fourteen nominees.
How the candidates were chosen
Members of the Hall’s coaching subcommittee evaluated the nominees and voted to advance the five coaches. The subcommittee will present these candidates to the Hall’s 25‑person selection committee, which will vote in early 2027. A candidate must receive at least 80% support to be inducted, and the Hall expects between three and seven coaches to be elected each year.
Coach profiles
Bill Belichick is a six‑time Super Bowl champion head coach with the New England Patriots and also earned two rings as a defensive assistant with the New York Giants. After his final season in New England in 2023, Belichick moved to college football and is now in his second season at the University of North Carolina. His career has been marked by both on‑field success and controversy, including the 2007 “Spygate” incident that resulted in a $500,000 fine for filming the New York Jets’ signals.
Tom Coughlin captured two Super Bowl titles with the New York Giants, defeating Belichick’s Patriots both times. Over 20 seasons with the Giants and Jacksonville Jaguars, Coughlin compiled a 182‑157 record and also earned a championship as an assistant with the Giants.
Mike Holmgren guided the Green Bay Packers to a Super Bowl victory and posted a 174‑122 record, including postseason play, during his 17‑year tenure with the Packers and Seattle Seahawks. He also collected two rings as an assistant with the San Francisco 49ers.
Dan Reeves amassed a 201‑174‑2 record over 23 seasons with the Denver Broncos, New York Giants and Atlanta Falcons. He led the Broncos to three Super Bowl appearances and the Falcons to one, though the Falcons went 0‑4 in those games. Reeves also earned a championship as an assistant with the Dallas Cowboys.
Mike Shanahan won back‑to‑back Super Bowls with the Denver Broncos and posted a 178‑144 record across 20 seasons with the Broncos and Washington Redskins. He also earned a ring as an assistant with the 49ers.
Other Hall of Fame selections
In addition to the coaching finalists, the Hall announced five contributors who have advanced: Ralph Hay, Robert Kraft, Virginia McCaskey, Doug Williams and John Wooten. The final ballot will include one contributor, one coach and 13 modern‑era players, later narrowed to ten and then seven candidates.
What’s next
The complete Class of 2027 will be revealed at the NFL Honors ceremony in Los Angeles in February, with the induction ceremony scheduled for August in Canton, Ohio.
