Big Ten Week 3 Preview: USC vs Rutgers, UCLA Hosts Purdue, Notre Dame at Michigan State

Saturday marks the start of conference play for the Big Ten, with three key games that will shape the race for the league title. Fans across the Midwest and beyond can tune in to see No. 12 USC face Rutgers at 2:30 p.m. CT on CBS, while UCLA hosts Purdue on the Big Ten Network at 11 p.m. ET. The evening’s marquee matchup pits Michigan State against No. 3 Notre Dame in South Bend at 6:30 p.m. CT on NBC.

Rankings and poll outlook

The latest AP and USA Today Coaches polls show nine Big Ten teams in the AP Top 25 and ten in the coaches’ poll. Indiana sits at No. 4, Ohio State at No. 6, and USC at No. 12 in the AP rankings, with Penn State (No. 14), Iowa (No. 18), Michigan (No. 19) and Oregon (No. 21) also represented. Washington and UCLA earned votes but fell outside the top 25.

In the coaches’ poll, Indiana, Ohio State and Michigan hold the same spots as the AP poll, while USC moves to No. 11, Penn State to No. 15, Oregon to No. 18, Iowa to No. 20 and Washington to No. 24. Nebraska and UCLA also received votes, underscoring the depth of the conference.

Player of the week honors

Big Ten officials announced the weekly awards on Monday. Nebraska quarterback Anthony Colandrea earned Offensive Player of the Week after throwing a career‑high four touchdown passes before halftime, finishing with 222 passing yards and 33 rushing yards. He became the first Nebraska quarterback since 2016 to record at least three touchdown passes in consecutive games.

Defensive Player of the Week went to John Henry Daley of Michigan for his impact in the Wolverines’ win over Oklahoma. Daley notched his first sack, added 3.0 tackles for loss and recorded eight total tackles.

Special Teams Player of the Week was awarded to Iowa’s Caden Buhr, who nailed a 42‑yard field goal with 15 seconds left to lift the Hawkeyes past Iowa State, 16‑13.

Freshman of the Week honors went to USC tight end Mark Bowman, who posted a team‑best six receptions for 83 yards against Louisiana. His performance marked the most receiving yards by a Trojan tight end in a single game since 2009 and made him the first tight end to score two touchdowns in a game for USC since 2022.

Key game notes

Michigan’s 17‑10 victory over No. 11 Oklahoma was historic, delivering the Wolverines their first home win against a ranked opponent since 2024 and the first ever triumph over the Sooners.

Indiana’s 55‑0 rout of Howard added a seventh win by at least 50 points since 2024, the most dominant margin among FBS programs this season.

All three Saturday games carry significant implications for conference standings and postseason positioning. USC’s road test at Rutgers could solidify its top‑15 standing, while UCLA hopes to leverage home‑field advantage against Purdue. The Michigan State‑Notre Dame clash is a potential early‑season indicator of which team will contend for the Big Ten East crown.

What’s at stake

Each matchup offers a chance for teams to improve their national perception and strengthen their case for a College Football Playoff berth. With the Big Ten’s depth evident in the polls, a single upset could reshape the championship picture.

Fans should mark their calendars and set their DVRs, as the Saturday slate promises high‑stakes football, standout individual performances, and the early drama that defines a Big Ten season.
