Big E fair opens in West Springfield with family treats, Connecticut vendors and military appreciation

West Springfield, Mass. – The beloved Big E fair opened its gates at 8 a.m. on Friday, welcoming families eager to start the season with classic fair foods, attractions and a special salute to the nation’s military.

Longtime fairgoer Kelly Schindler of Chicopee described the opening day ritual: “We got the cherry cheesecake sundae. We come here every year. We usually try the different donuts that they have. So it’s our family tradition for opening day.” Her words capture the multigenerational tradition that the Big E has cultivated for decades.

Beyond the sweet treats, visitors were treated to the sea‑lion exhibit, which greeted guests early in the morning. Organizers anticipate roughly 1.5 million attendees over the two‑week run, a figure that underscores the fair’s importance to New England families and local economies.

Connecticut vendors bring regional flavor

Of the hundreds of vendors participating this year, about 70 hail from neighboring Connecticut. Among them is Ani Robaina, owner of Ani’s Table and Marketplace in Rocky Hill, who is making her Big E debut. “We’re super excited. The exposure is tremendous,” Robaina said. “As a new business owner, we can get more people in front of us than you can get any other way.” Her comments highlight how the fair serves as a vital platform for small‑business owners seeking broader reach.

Honoring those who serve

The opening day also featured a heartfelt tribute to service members. Military personnel and veterans received free admission, and Connecticut American Legion Department Commander Mike Mitchell used the occasion to remind attendees that the veteran community stands ready to support active‑duty members and their families. “A way to know there’s something more than their service,” Mitchell said, emphasizing the importance of community backing for those who protect our freedoms.

Family‑focused events, local entrepreneurship and military appreciation are core to the Big E’s mission, aligning with the values of faith, family and liberty that many in the region hold dear. As the fair continues through Sunday, Oct. 4, visitors can expect a blend of traditional rides, agricultural exhibits, and opportunities to support regional businesses.

Whether you’re a longtime attendee or a first‑time visitor, the Big E offers a wholesome, community‑centered experience that celebrates New England’s heritage while looking forward to the future.
