Bentonville summit highlights AI’s growing role in local retail

Business leaders and students gathered Thursday at the Future of Commerce Summit in Bentonville, Arkansas, to examine how artificial intelligence (AI) is changing the way consumers search for and buy products. Hosted by the Sam M. Walton College of Business at the Compton Hotel, the event featured representatives from Walmart, Google and the National Retail Federation, along with University of Arkansas students and researchers.

University dean frames the conversation

Dr. Brent Williams, dean of the Sam M. Walton College of Business, said the summit was designed to help both businesses and students prepare for a rapidly evolving retail landscape. “Today was about the future of commerce and how the future of commerce is shifting,” he told attendees.

AI as a core driver of commerce

Williams emphasized that AI is already having a clear impact on how shoppers locate products and complete purchases. “Artificial intelligence is having clearly an impact on commerce, how we search, how we buy,” he explained, noting that trust remains a critical factor for both retailers and consumers as AI tools become more integrated into everyday shopping.

Google unveils Universal Commerce Protocol

A key topic was the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), an open standard developed by Google to enable seamless communication between retailers and AI platforms. Ashish Gupta, Google’s global vice president and general manager of shopping, described UCP as a “common language” that lets AI agents interact directly with businesses throughout the entire shopping journey—from discovery to purchase and even post‑purchase actions.

“It covers the entire journey of shopping,” Gupta said. “From discovery to purchase and even post‑purchase action.” He added that the protocol allows a retailer to implement a single specification and then connect with any AI agent that supports UCP, eliminating the need for multiple, bespoke integrations.

Implications for local retailers

For Arkansas‑based retailers, the protocol promises a more efficient path to reach shoppers who are increasingly interacting with AI assistants, voice‑activated devices and chatbots. By adopting UCP, a local store could enable customers to discover products and complete transactions without leaving the AI environment, potentially increasing conversion rates and reducing friction.

Education and workforce development

Williams noted that the college is already weaving AI concepts into curricula across marketing, supply‑chain management and other disciplines. The goal is to equip students with the skills needed to solve real‑world business challenges using AI, ensuring the region’s workforce remains competitive as technology advances.

Looking ahead

Summit participants agreed that AI‑powered commerce is still in its early stages, but the momentum is undeniable. As more retailers adopt standards like UCP and integrate AI into their operations, Bentonville and the broader Arkansas business community stand to benefit from increased innovation, job creation and consumer convenience.

The summit underscored the importance of collaboration between academia, industry and technology partners to shape a future where AI enhances, rather than replaces, the personal touch that local businesses are known for.
