Bend-La Pine Schools announced two engagement sessions this week for families, staff and community members of Silver Rail Elementary. The school has remained closed since the fatal shooting that claimed a teacher and three students.
District leadership invites input
Superintendent Steven Cook and school board Chair Amy Tatom told FOX 12 on Monday that the district will meet directly with Silver Rail families and staff on Wednesday, followed by a larger community forum on Thursday night. Both meetings will give participants the chance to ask questions of district officials and share their concerns.
In addition to the in‑person sessions, the district has posted an online survey where residents can submit written questions or comments. The survey will stay open until Monday, Nov. 9.
No set timeline for reopening
Cook emphasized that there is no specific timetable for when—or even if—Silver Rail will reopen. “That decision depends on what we hear from the community,” he said.
He noted that the majority of families who have responded to the survey so far want the school to reopen, but many also want concrete safety measures in place first. “What we’re hearing is requests for increased mental‑health resources, hardening the facility, metal detectors, bullet‑proof glass and a stronger law‑enforcement presence,” Cook explained.
Board’s commitment to safety and support
Board Chair Tatom stressed that the board is listening and committed to protecting students and staff. “As a board, we want our community to know that we are here to listen and support and do everything in our power to make sure that our families, students and staff are safe and able to head back into that space to reclaim it,” she said.
Cook also acknowledged that some families do not wish to return to Silver Rail. The district is working with those families to arrange transfers to other schools or to enroll in online instruction.
Context and next steps
All other Bend-La Pine schools reopened on Oct. 21, five days after the shooting. The district’s upcoming sessions are intended to gather input that will shape any future decisions about Silver Rail’s status, whether that means reopening with added security, repurposing the building or pursuing other options.
Community members are encouraged to attend the Wednesday engagement session, join the Thursday town‑hall, or submit their thoughts through the online survey. The district says it will consider all feedback before making a final determination.
