Beloved SCSU English Professor Mike Shea Killed in Whalley Ave Hit‑and‑Run

Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU) announced the death of longtime English professor Mike Shea, 74, following a hit‑and‑run on Whalley Avenue in New Haven. Shea was struck by an e‑bike on Friday, Oct. 9, while crossing the marked crosswalk outside Lyric Hall after attending a documentary screening.

Accident details

According to New Haven Police Department (NHPD) spokesperson Officer Christian Bruckhart, the e‑bike rider traveled north on Whalley, passed stopped vehicles at the signal, entered the intersection and collided with Shea. The rider then fled the scene on Fountain Street toward Central Avenue. Shea was taken to Yale New Haven Hospital with serious injuries and later died.

NHPD has not yet made an arrest and is asking anyone with information to contact the detective division at (203) 946‑6304. The department confirmed the e‑bike involved did not appear to be a rentable Ride New Haven unit.

University response

Interim President Sandy Bulmer sent an email to the SCSU community, describing Shea as “a dedicated colleague and friend whose warmth, humor, and generosity touched the lives of students and colleagues over decades.” English Department Chair Cindy Stretch added that Shea “was a walking, talking reminder of what’s best about this place… there was not a cynical bone in his body.”

Community remembrance

Friends, former students, and colleagues flooded social media with memories of Shea’s passion for the arts and his commitment to teaching. Former colleague George Rosso recalled meeting Shea in 1987 over a shared love of Bob Dylan and praised his ability to make Shakespeare feel like a living performance. Long‑time friend Tim Parrish described Shea as “the Johnny Appleseed of love, care, activism, and creativity,” noting his relentless enthusiasm for movies, plays, and music.

Former students highlighted Shea’s demanding yet supportive teaching style, saying he pushed them to think critically and become confident writers. One student recalled how Shea’s encouragement during a difficult semester changed the course of her academic career.

Calls for safer streets

Neighbors and local activists have long advocated for a safer Whalley Avenue. Following the fatal crash, the Westville/West Hills Community Management Team convened at Lyric Hall to discuss pedestrian‑safety improvements. Attendees suggested flashing pedestrian lights, a raised traffic table, and better coordination between city and state agencies, noting that Whalley is a state‑owned road.

Lyric Hall owner John Cavaliere echoed these concerns, emphasizing the need for engineered traffic solutions and transit planning that reduces vehicle volumes on the corridor.

Police perspective

New Haven Police Chief David Zannelli confirmed that, to his knowledge, Shea was crossing the street correctly. The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities continue to seek witnesses.

Legacy

Mike Shea’s impact on Southern Connecticut State University and the broader New Haven arts community will be remembered for generations. His dedication to students, colleagues, and the cultural life of the city stands as a testament to the power of education and community service.
