Evergreen, Ala. – On Tuesday, the City of Evergreen joined forces with the volunteer group United Cajun Navy to deliver essential supplies to residents of Conecuh County still recovering from Hurricane Isaias. The distribution, which began at 10 a.m., ran until all donated items were exhausted.
Broad range of aid for families and pets
Mayor Stanley Stallworth explained that the donations included bottled water, a variety of non‑perishable foods such as peanut butter, ravioli, chicken and canned tuna, as well as dog and cat food for pet owners who were unable to care for their animals after the storm.
“It’s a pretty broad array. They’re getting, obviously, bottled water. They’re getting non‑perishable goods… peanut butter, ravioli, chicken, tuna in the can. Even dog food and cat food for those people who have pets that, you know, cannot take care of them right now,” Stallworth said.
Reid State baseball players lend a hand
City employees were assisted by members of the Reid State College baseball team, who helped load the pallets of supplies before practice. Though most of the players are not native to the area, they embraced the opportunity to serve the community.
“It feels good to help out, especially with us being new to the community, coming from all different places. It gives us a good look at who we’re helping and where we live,” said Cooper Fuller, a member of the team.
Residents express gratitude
Hundreds of families gathered at the distribution site, many sharing personal stories of loss and resilience. Long‑time resident Dorothy Fantroy said the aid will be a blessing for both her and her animals.
“Oh, it will help me in a good way with my animals and myself,” Fantroy said, adding that she was without power for five days but managed to persevere.
Tim Brown, another storm victim, emphasized how the supplies would benefit his entire neighborhood.
“It will help us a whole lot. A whole lot. Family and all in the neighborhood. Everything,” he said.
City officials highlight community effort
Connie Baggett, director of program management for Evergreen, noted the outpouring of thanks from residents for both the city and the United Cajun Navy.
“Everyone that comes through is just full of ‘thank you’ for what the city is doing and for the United Cajun Navy and what they were able to bring to us to help out in this time of need,” Baggett said.
Future distribution events planned
The city announced that additional distribution events will be scheduled as needed. Residents are encouraged to follow Evergreen’s official social‑media channels for updates on upcoming dates and locations.
Power has largely been restored across Conecuh County, but cleanup and rebuilding efforts continue. The partnership between Evergreen, United Cajun Navy and local volunteers demonstrates the community’s commitment to supporting one another as they move forward from the devastation of Hurricane Isaias.
