A black bear or two had lower Westville on edge Thursday evening through mid-day Friday as neighbors spotted them roaming through Edgewood Park as well as nearby backyards around West Rock Avenue and West Elm Street.
Some neighbors reported seeing one bear. One notice posted to SeeClickFix reported “a baby and mama bear spotted going through garbage.”
Alder Adam Marchand and Mayor Justin Elicker sent out alerts to Westvilleans cautioning them about the bears, including advice to “pay attention to your surroundings.” Elicker reported that the city police and parks departments are on the case along with the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.
“Bears will usually wander back into more secluded areas. However, if you see the bear, keep your distance and leave it alone. Most bears will avoid humans if they hear them coming,” Elicker advised.
If a bear notices you, stay calm and do not run or make any sudden movements. Try to make yourself look as large as possible by slowly waving your arms and make your presence known by yelling or making other loud noises, then back away slowly and leave the area.
