Dr. Ebony Hunter, a pediatric emergency medicine physician at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital, reports seeing cases during the 2022 national formula shortage and notes a resurgence as living costs rise. “Formula is very expensive,” Hunter explains, emphasizing the potential health risks. Infant formula is meticulously formulated to provide the necessary balance of nutrients and electrolytes. Adding water disrupts this balance, particularly affecting babies under six months whose kidneys are not fully developed. Dr. Hunter emphasizes, “There is so much help available. You just have to tap into it.
