Bangladesh Parliament elects veteran BNP leader Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as president

In a historic vote on Thursday, the 349‑member Jatiya Sangsad (Parliament) of Bangladesh elected Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, a senior figure in the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), to the largely ceremonial post of president. Alamgir secured 255 votes, defeating opposition candidate Oli Ahmed of Jamaat‑e‑Islami, who received 88 votes.

First contested presidential election in decades

This is the first contested presidential election since October 1991, when Bangladesh shifted to a parliamentary system that has since seen every presidential race run unopposed. The vacancy arose after former President Mohammed Shahabuddin resigned in July, ending a term that began under the long‑standing rule of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Alamgir’s political background

Alamgir has long served as secretary‑general of the BNP, the main opposition party that has opposed Hasina’s 15‑year tenure. He played a leading role in the mass protests that forced Hasina into exile in August 2024, amid accusations of authoritarian governance and corruption in public‑sector hiring. Since then, Hasina’s party has been barred from participating in national elections.

Following the protests, a transitional government led by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus oversaw an 18‑month interim period. In February, the BNP‑aligned coalition headed by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, won a landslide parliamentary majority, cementing a shift in power away from Hasina’s party.

Role of the presidency

While the Bangladeshi president is the constitutional head of state and commander‑in‑chief of the armed forces, the position is largely ceremonial. The president’s duties become pivotal during political crises, such as overseeing the formation of caretaker governments or endorsing constitutional amendments.

Alamgir is expected to assume office on Friday, joining a government that has promised to restore what it calls “democratic norms” after years of alleged autocratic rule.

Context of political turbulence

Shahabuddin, a close ally of Hasina, faced intense pressure from student groups that led the 2024 uprising. Protesters labeled him a collaborator and demanded his resignation, which he eventually tendered, further destabilizing the incumbent administration.

The new administration under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has pledged to address corruption, reform the civil service, and strengthen the rule of law. Observers note that the BNP’s victory and Alamgir’s election signal a decisive shift in Bangladesh’s political landscape, though the nation remains watchful of how the new leadership will manage lingering tensions.
