Bangladesh faces worsening dengue outbreak as hospitals strain under record admissions

Bangladesh is confronting a rapidly escalating dengue crisis. The health ministry reports that 42,590 people have been hospitalized and 117 deaths have occurred so far in 2026. In the last 24 hours alone, 1,558 patients were admitted and four lives were lost, marking the highest daily tally this year.

Experts predict the peak is still ahead

Professor Kabirul Bashar, a medical entomologist at Jahangirnagar University, says his surveillance model indicates hospitalizations could surpass 30,000 this month if the current trend continues. “The peak has not been reached yet,” Bashar warned, adding that weather conditions are likely to sustain transmission into October.

Families feel the strain

For Zahid Hasan, 32, the outbreak became a personal ordeal when his four‑year‑old son fell ill with dengue. After visiting three government hospitals without finding a bed, Hasan secured a private hospital spot with a relative’s help. The child required seven bags of blood and plasma before being discharged, and he remains weak but is recovering.

Physician Professor Tarek Alam emphasized that dengue patients can deteriorate quickly after fever subsides, developing complications such as plasma leakage, low blood pressure, shock, and severe bleeding. “Patients are flooding hospitals, and warning signs such as abdominal pain, dizziness and unusual lethargy must not be ignored,” he said.

Nationwide spread and government response

The Aedes mosquito, which transmits dengue, has expanded beyond Dhaka into districts and rural areas, with cases now reported in all 64 districts. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has ordered a nationwide cleanup and awareness campaign, urging citizens to eliminate stagnant water and other breeding sites. “Fogging alone cannot control dengue if breeding sites remain untouched,” Bashar noted, calling for evidence‑based interventions.

Bangladesh’s health system is also battling a severe measles outbreak that has claimed nearly 1,000 child lives this year, further stretching resources.

Looking ahead

Health officials caution that September could outpace August, which recorded the highest monthly dengue caseload of the year. Continued community participation in mosquito‑control measures and timely medical care are essential to curb the outbreak.
