Italian American Organizations United has raised over $200,000 to replace a statue of Christopher Columbus that was torn down and thrown into Baltimore’s harbor in 2020. The new memorial, called the Anonymous Italian Immigrant Family Memorial, will depict an Italian immigrant husband, wife, and infant child.
Preserving History
The Italian American Organizations United is a coalition of groups dedicated to preserving and celebrating the history and heritage of Italian Americans. The new memorial will be made of Italian Carrara marble and will be securely mounted on the same pedestal that supported the Columbus statue.
The artist, Sebastian Martorana, is a Baltimore resident and noted sculptor. The memorial is expected to be completed in time for installation in the fall of 2027. Three new plaques will be added to the fence surrounding the pedestal, recognizing donors, ethnic groups that lived in the area, and the D’Alesandro family, including former mayors of Baltimore and Nancy Pelosi.
