Ballot Measure Aims to Protect Women’s Sports

A national strategy to protect women’s sports has been launched, with a ballot measure in Colorado. The measure, which will be on the November ballot, would require students to compete on sports teams based on their sex assigned at birth.

Grassroots Effort

The campaign to get the measure on the ballot was led by grassroots organizers, who gathered 25% more signatures than required. Jennifer Sey, a former gymnastics champion and CEO of XX-XY Athletics, said the campaign was successful despite having little money.

Sey noted that the next wave of the strategy will involve ballot initiatives in blue and purple states. She also emphasized the importance of changing the cultural conversation around the issue, saying that it’s not just about changing the law, but also about making it socially unacceptable to allow biological males to compete in women’s sports.

Executive Order

President Donald Trump signed an executive order last year that prohibits transgender female athletes from competing in female sports. However, Sey believes that more concrete legislation is needed to ensure that the issue is addressed at the state and national levels.
