Baby pygmy hippo Piper takes first swim at Edinburgh Zoo, delighting families

Edinburgh, Scotland – Families visiting Edinburgh Zoo this week were treated to a heart‑warming sight when three‑week‑old Piper, the zoo’s newest pygmy hippo, took her first swim. The tiny hippo followed her mother, Gloria, into the pool before gaining enough confidence to explore the water on her own.

After a tentative lap and a curious nibble on driftwood, Piper paused beside her mother, who was dozing peacefully in the shallow water. When it was time to return to dry land, animal team leader Jonny Appleyard offered a helping hand, guiding the youngster safely out of the pool.

Piper was born on August 3 at Edinburgh Zoo and has quickly become a beloved attraction for guests of all ages. Her playful antics and gentle demeanor have drawn crowds eager to witness the early stages of a species that is both rare and endangered.

Why the pygmy hippo matters

Pygmy hippopotamuses are native to the forests and swamps of West Africa, primarily Liberia. The International Union for Conservation of Nature classifies them as endangered, estimating that only about 2,500 remain in the wild due to ongoing habitat loss. Conservation programs worldwide, including those at Edinburgh Zoo, aim to raise awareness and support breeding efforts that could help bolster the dwindling population.

Videos of pygmy hippos have gone viral in recent years, with social‑media sensations like Moo Deng in Thailand and Haggis, another Edinburgh resident, capturing the imagination of viewers worldwide. Piper’s debut swim adds another charming chapter to the growing public fascination with these gentle creatures.

Family‑friendly learning at the zoo

Edinburgh Zoo continues to prioritize educational experiences that connect visitors with wildlife conservation. Interactive displays near the hippo enclosure explain the species’ natural habitat, the challenges they face, and what individuals can do to support global conservation efforts.

Zoo staff encourage families to ask questions, observe the animals respectfully, and consider supporting conservation initiatives through donations or volunteer opportunities. By fostering a sense of stewardship, the zoo hopes to inspire the next generation of caretakers for endangered species like the pygmy hippo.

For those planning a visit, the zoo remains open daily with a range of exhibits and programs designed for children and adults alike. Piper’s first swim is a reminder that even the smallest new arrivals can make a big impact on community spirit and wildlife awareness.
