Avalanche’s Nathan MacKinnon Injured in Game 3 Against Vegas

In a challenging turn for the Colorado Avalanche, star player Nathan MacKinnon sustained a right leg injury during Sunday’s Game 3 of the Western Conference finals against the Vegas Golden Knights. The Avalanche, already trailing 3-0 in the series, lost 5-3 in the game, and now face the possibility of playing without one of their key players.

MacKinnon’s Injury Details

MacKinnon, who led the NHL with 53 goals in the regular season, was injured when he blocked a powerful shot from Shea Theodore, taking the puck directly off his right knee. The incident occurred with just under eight minutes left in the second period. Despite the pain, MacKinnon managed to clear the puck past the blue line before referees stopped the play to allow medical attention.

After limping off the ice under his own power, MacKinnon attempted to continue playing. He returned for two more shifts but eventually retreated to the locker room late in the second period. In the third period, he played only one full-strength shift but contributed during a power play and a 6-on-5 situation when the Avalanche pulled their goalie in the game’s closing minutes.

Team Reactions and Future Prospects

Colorado goalie Scott Wedgewood praised MacKinnon’s determination, stating, “You might have to kill him to get him off the ice. Just kind of the person he is, the competitor he is. He wants to win more than anybody.” Despite MacKinnon’s efforts, the Avalanche’s coach Jared Bednar did not provide an update on his status for Tuesday’s Game 4, where the team faces elimination.

MacKinnon, 30, has been a crucial player for the Avalanche, tallying a point in nine of Colorado’s 12 playoff games, with a total of 15 postseason points. His injury coincided with the return of star defenseman Cale Makar, who had missed the first two games of the series due to an upper-body injury.
