New South Wales has become Australia’s third state to confirm a case of H5N1 bird flu. The case was found in a migratory seabird near the coastal town of Hawks Nest.
Bird Flu Outbreak
The H5 strain has led to the culling of hundreds of millions of birds worldwide, disrupting food supplies and driving up prices. Human infections of the virus remain rare.
Australia’s state Agriculture Minister, Tara Moriarty, stated that there is no evidence of the virus spreading to local wildlife and that it has not been detected in commercial poultry flocks, captive birds, or any other birds in New South Wales.
The state government has launched a response plan, including increased surveillance operations and the deployment of extra staff to support the industry.
