The Austin Championship, the PGA Tour’s first event in the city since the 2023 World Golf Championships‑Dell Technologies Match Play, will be held at Omni Barton Creek Resort & Spa from Nov. 9‑12. Tournament director Ian Helm of HNS Sports Group says the event could become an annual fixture if a lead sponsor is secured.
Economic lift for a slower month
According to Nathan Kopp, executive director of the Austin Sports Commission, the tournament arrives during a traditionally lighter period for special events in Austin. “November is a little bit lighter on the special event calendar in Austin … aside from UT football games,” Kopp explained. “It will be a great boost for our hotels and restaurants and attractions, and drive much‑needed visitation to the destination.”
During the 2021‑2023 Match Play tournaments, the PGA Tour generated 5,000 overnight hotel guests and $12‑$14 million in direct spending, including roughly $2.5 million in lodging revenue and $2 million in food‑and‑beverage sales. While exact projections for this year’s championship are not yet available, the commission expects a substantial economic impact.
National exposure as a tourism infomercial
The event will be broadcast nationally on the Golf Channel, PGA Tour Live on ESPN+, SiriusXM and the World Feed. Kopp likens the coverage to an infomercial for Austin, noting that viewers across the country will see a side of the city beyond its well‑known music scene and college football.
“A lot of Austin’s nationally televised events like UT football and events at the Moody Center showcase the urban side of Austin and downtown Austin,” Kopp said. “Beyond the people that attend the event, a lot will be watching it on TV and seeing a different side of Austin.”
Local flavor and charitable giving
Organizers are emphasizing local sponsors and food vendors, offering classic Austin fare such as barbecue and tacos to spectators. The tournament’s primary charitable beneficiary is Play Yellow, a fundraising program for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, with Dell Children’s Medical Center as a member. The second beneficiary, Folds of Honor, provides scholarships to children and spouses of fallen or disabled service members and first responders.
General admission tickets range from $80‑$100 per day, with complimentary entry for children 12 and under when accompanied by a ticketed adult (maximum two children per adult). The public can attend the competition from Nov. 12‑15.
Future of the event
Helm stresses that the goal is to make the Austin Championship a lasting part of the community. “The full intent here is for the Austin Championship to be here, in the Austin community, not just for 2026 but for years to come,” he said. The PGA Tour is currently in talks with potential sponsors to secure a lead partner for the 2026 edition and beyond.
With 120 players competing for a $6 million purse and 500 FedExCup points, the tournament also offers local fans a chance to see Austin native Cole Sherwood and former University of Texas standouts Christian Maas and Tommy Morrison on the re‑imagined Fazio Canyons Course.
