AT&T settlement payouts begin soon after court approval

Residents who filed claims in the two AT&T data breach class actions are slated to receive their settlements shortly. A federal court in Dallas gave final approval of the settlement agreement earlier this month, setting the stage for electronic or paper‑check payments to be issued within 60 days of the effective date.

Timeline for payouts

The settlement agreement defines the effective date as ten days after the deadline for any appeal of the Final Approval Order. The court granted final approval on Friday, Oct. 2, giving AT&T a 30‑day window to file an appeal, which ends on Monday, Nov. 2. If no appeal is filed, the effective date is projected to fall around Thursday, Nov. 12, and payments should follow within two months of that date.

Who qualifies for the settlement?

Two separate data breaches affected AT&T customers in 2024. The first breach, discovered in March, involved a leak of AT&T‑specific fields that appeared on the dark web. The second breach, uncovered in July, stemmed from an illegal download of limited data from an AT&T workspace hosted on a third‑party cloud platform operated by Snowflake, Inc. AT&T indicated the compromised data dated back to 2019 or earlier.

The breaches exposed Social Security numbers, phone numbers, addresses and other personal information for roughly 7.6 million active customers and 65.4 million former customers. Anyone whose information was part of the leaked data is considered a member of either the AT&T 1 Settlement Class (March breach) or the AT&T 2 Settlement Class (July breach). Eligible members received notification emails from the domain [email protected] and could call 833‑890‑4930 for verification.

Settlement amounts

Under the agreement, an AT&T 1 Settlement Class member may receive up to $5,000 if they can demonstrate that their losses are fairly traceable to the March breach and submit a claim by the deadline listed on the settlement website. An AT&T 2 Settlement Class member may receive up to $2,500 for losses tied to the July breach. The total settlement pool includes $149 million for the March breach and $28 million for the July breach, as agreed in early‑stage mediation in Montana and Texas.

All claim filing deadlines have now passed, and the court‑approved payout schedule will determine when claimants receive their funds.

Why the lawsuit mattered

Plaintiffs alleged that the breaches led to fraudulent withdrawals, unauthorized loans, and significant drops in credit scores. The settlement provides monetary relief to affected consumers and holds AT&T accountable for the security failures that exposed millions of personal records.

Consumers who have not yet received a payment should verify their claim status through the settlement website or the dedicated phone line. As the payments roll out, AT&T is expected to comply with the court‑ordered distribution timeline.
