Atlanta Falcons face quarterback uncertainty as Tua Tagovailoa sustains oblique strain

The Atlanta Falcons entered Thursday’s practice with a growing quarterback dilemma. Starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who was named the Week 1 starter after Michael Penix Jr. was still not cleared to play, suffered an oblique strain and was listed as day‑to‑day.

Injury details and immediate impact

During the media portion of practice, Tagovailoa was seen grabbing his back after a pass drill. He quickly sat on the grass before jogging off the field. He did not attempt another pass for the remainder of the session, and backup quarterback Cooper Rush took his place in the drills.

“I’m not sure what happened, but it’s Thursday practice,” Rush told ESPN. “Practice has to go on and so you’re up next and that was a good day. It was good to get out there and get some real reps with that group and we’ll see what happens.” Rush added that this was his first significant workload with the Falcons’ first‑team offense since signing with the team.

Backup options and depth chart

With Tagovailoa’s status uncertain, the Falcons are likely to turn to Rush, a veteran who has started 16 games over eight seasons, for the season opener. If Rush also proves unavailable, the team could look to undrafted free‑agent rookie Jack Strand, who signed this offseason, as a further back‑up.

Michael Penix Jr., the franchise quarterback the Falcons hoped to return, is still rehabbing a torn left ACL suffered in Week 11 of last season. That injury marked his third ACL tear, the first occurring in college. Penix’s recovery timeline remains unclear, and the team has not indicated a definitive return date.

Coaching perspective

New head coach Kevin Stefanski, who took over the Falcons this offseason, will have to make a decision on who will lead the offense in the opening game. Stefanski emphasized that the quarterback situation is fluid and that the team will evaluate Tagovailoa’s progress over the weekend.

“We have a lot of good guys ready to step in,” Stefanski said in a post‑practice interview. “Our focus is on getting the best preparation possible, no matter who is under center on Sunday.”

What fans can expect

Falcons supporters should anticipate an update on Tagovailoa’s condition by the weekend. If the injury persists, the team is prepared to start Rush, who brings experience and familiarity with the new offensive system. The coaching staff remains optimistic that the quarterback depth chart will provide stability regardless of the setback.

Atlanta’s faithful are encouraged to stay tuned to official team communications for the final roster decision ahead of the season opener.
