The Atlanta Police Department (APD) has announced enhanced security measures for the upcoming World Cup semi-final match between England and Argentina, scheduled to take place in Atlanta on Wednesday.
Security Preparations
The APD has stated that additional personnel and resources will be deployed to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all attendees. Argentina’s security minister, Alejandra Monteoliva, indicated that rival fans will be channelled into the stadium through separate entrances.
The APD works closely with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and other public safety partners to plan for such events, but does not discuss specific operational risk assessments or planning details.
Historical Rivalry
The soccer rivalry between Argentina and England has been intense, with several controversial incidents in their previous World Cup meetings. The rivalry was further intensified by the 1982 military conflict between the two countries over the Falkland Islands and South Georgia.
Argentina fans will not be allowed to bring flags or banners into the stadium that claim sovereignty over the islands, which the Argentines call Islas Malvinas.
